Art and therapy coming together
What is this group about?
This group uses the art of photography to help participants explore themselves and their world. Participants will learn basic skills of photography and utilize these skills to create an art journal that reflects their life story. Through this process, the group leaders will guide participants to reflect on various aspects of their story in order to find encouragement, challenge misconceptions about themselves, and grow from difficult and stressful experiences.
Is it a good fit for me or someone I know?
This group is a good fit for those who desire to learn about photography while also learning more about themselves. Our program format relies on group discussion and exploration and participants are invited to engage and share their thoughts.
How long does it last?
ViewFinders runs for 12 weeks, with each weekly session lasting approximately one hour.
What can I expect to get out of it?
You can expect to have fun! Though the nature of the discussion will at times be serious, the goal of the group is to utilize photography as a means for exploring self. This means that you get to take pictures of whatever interests you. We also hope that, as the group progresses, you get to know yourself better (which is always a good thing!).
What ages is it designed for? How large is the group?
ViewFinders was initially crafted for ages 10-14. Our hope is to also offer the group to other ages and to community groups. Groups will ideally be composed of 8-12 participants.
Does the research support the type of therapies involved in this group?
You betcha! Experiential therapy has been shown to be efficacious in treating depression, anxiety, and co-existing mental health disorders with medical conditions. Read more here.
